Are there alien intelligences? How could we communicate with them? What about UFOs? The answers to these questions take us to Egypt to decode ancient hieroglyphics, to the largest radio telescope on Earth and, in the Spaceship of the Imagination, to visit other civilizations in space.

Dr. Sagan answers questions such as: "What is the life span of a planetary civilization?" and "Will we one day hook up with a network of civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy?"

  • I don't how many Star Trek enthusiasts would actually watch this, but something struck me.

Dr. Sagan makes reference here to an Egyptian god called "P'takh"(not sure of the spelling, but that's what it sounded like to me.). What's amazing about it is that it sounds very similar to the Klingon insult word "Petakh"(not sure of THAT spelling, either) which would mean "A piece of slime or lower form of life." :)

Some more to Vangelis' musical mastery towards the end. :)

  • just look at the opening scene of this one!!!

  • An interesting side note on Thomas Young. Along with deciphering the Rosetta stone he was also the first to remark on the wave properties of light. Gave us Young Modulus ( or Elasticity for you physics buffs) as well as did significant work in mathematics. wiki his page if you get a chance!
