  • I must say I'm an enormous fan of both of these artists. It is not a competition, foiks! Richard, of course, is without peer as a guitar player. Both are wonderful songwriters, among the best of their generation.

  • Hello louie - I was speaking generally. He obviously has slowed down (as we all do) and outstanding songs no longer flow forth from his pen.

However some from the "New Depression" album have restored the faith a bit.

  • @gerrycol um, you know this is a Marty Robbins song, right? I assume you're talking about another song.

  • I think that's a bit unfair on RT, homeless. It wasn't meant to be a comedy song, it was a murder ballad. There's a long tradition of murder ballads, only when Nick Cave or someone does an album of them they're all trad folk songs and they feel safer. RT's song was shocking all right, because it was a modern song, but if it's a moral you want, the guy got his bloody comeuppance in the last verse.

Still, Loudon was great. The man who is tired of Loudon is tired of life!

  • Nice to see homelessbrother on here - he of the great LWIII collection on YouTube!

I too am a long-in the-tooth LW fan, and was also in the front stalls at the Festival Hall.

I was pleased to be reassured that Loudon remains (at 65) a great performer / entertainer, and (contrary to what I had feared) he is still able to write a cutting-edge song.

I agree that RT was rather outshone, but I don't expect RT fans to accept that.

  • I'm in tears.

    Loudon Wainwright, I adore you!

  • Great video. I am a massive Loudon Wainwright fan and was there in the front stalls. Loved his solo stuff much more than the collaborations but hey, anything with Loudon is better than just Richard Thompson alone.

RT sang a *comedy' song about a woman being raped, murdered and cut into pieces. I was shocked, not just because of recent news events. I also resented the way the volume was raised up for his set and my ears were ringing even the next morning from the sound of a single guitar.
