I am looking for a recording of Jim Shepherd with Black Dyke Band playing "Les Preludes" Can any experts out there tell me which album contained this song? Thanks

yes, a lovely tone and technical brilliance, especially in his prime, but how can you say that todays Richard marshall can't match him. For me and my humble opinion Richard Marshall is the best ever. But we can only admire both of them, both Brilliant !

nobody plays this like jim, what triple tongueing. He wasn't no spring chicken when this was recorded lol but still brilliant

I agree!

@borgias2 Re the music stand. Maurice Andre always played from the music too. It gives added security and you can have stylistic notes written on the page. If that improves a performance by 5% then as a competing bandsman it makes sense to use the music.

Jim Shepherd in his day was THE cornet player. Never over did anything and was and still is so musical in everything he plays. Some rave about Maurice Murphy or Willie Lang as the best top man at Dyke of all time but for me there was only one. Just listen to his quality of tone from the top to the bottom register flawless. The youngsters of today can fly around all over the place but they still can't match Jim and the likes for slow musical playing when it's required. Keep the faith.

Just one short question 'mblc40'
Jim has played this piece 'Pandora' to great effect many times.
Why then does he need a musical stand and the music to read the piece while he is playing,?
Surely, by now, he must obviously know the piece by heart?
Anyway no matter, for me at least, Jim is still the greatest cornetist of all time, without any shadow of a doubt, but I am just curious about the music stand.
Hence my question.
Your comment will be most welcome.
Thanks in anticipation.

Jim's modesty is just what makes him a great player.
Years ago (40-odd years ago actually), I modelled my tone on Jim's playing and almost got it right, even while using a Besson-5 mouthpiece!
My playing improved abundantly.
Anyway, I won't labour the point, except to say that he is still the greatest.
Cheers,
John
Thanks for your comment. Jim will be very pleased to read that, but I dont think he would agree with you, being the modest man that he is.
