An artist plays the pipa, a stringed traditional Chinese musical instrument, at the Community Dance and Craft Day event at Richmond Cultural Centre in Richmond, BC, Canada on May 8, 2010. The event was part of Asian Heritage Month celebrations being held every year by the city in May.
The two pieces of music played on the pipa by Zoe:
1) Rising Steps: It is a short folk song usually played to celebrate Chinese New Year. The melody of the song is delightful and happy. The theme is to wish people prosperity in the new year.
2) Little Sisters on the Grassland: This is a popular pipa concerto. There are four movements. The song is to describe some young girls' life in the countryside of China. Zoe plays the first movement only that describes the sisters playing and singing happily on the grassland.
The pipa is a four-stringed Chinese instrument, belonging to the plucked category of instruments. Sometimes called the Chinese lute, the instrument has a pear-shaped wooden body with a varying number of frets ranging from 1226.
The pipa appeared in the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BCE) and was developed during the Han Dynasty. It is one of the most popular Chinese instruments and has been played for nearly two thousand years in China.
