@MegaKaiser45 I don't think so because the Tiger II was not introduced until mid 1944 - I think the first unit completely equipped was on 1 September 1944. Less than 500 were made - although it would have been many more had it not been for the bombing. He may have used a King Tiger towards the end of the war!

@alanheath he was a King Tiger ace right?
-
@thommestom i think chromium +nickel? shortages affected their jet engines too.
the prewar mines were off limit to them...

@Lucasisgek82 the western allies used petrol in their tanks.
+it was only the 90's that nato realy ditched petrol for diesel

As far as I know Germany was quite short of some materials like aluminium and copper, which was important for heavy diesel engines of that time.

@dadepoot he noticed Michael Wittman lost a Front Toth in Battle and send him to his Dentist. see Michael Wittmann (SS Panzerkomandant) 4/5

@alanheath it could be because Kurt Knispel had most Tank Kills as Gunner not as Comander of the Tank. And it was the Amok Drive of Caen who made Michael Wittman verry popular. Two Days later he Died.

What did Hitler notice?

It took Russians 4 years to develop & build T34. Hitler builded Tiger tank in 10 months. They did not have a disel engin, and had no time to develop one.

@infernalzen After doing a little research I think that you are right with your synthetic fuel argument. I didn't know Germany relied so heavily on synthetic fuel. Some other reasons for using petrol instead of Diesel were that engineers generally considered Diesel to be fuel for ships, not land vehicles. Also, the Germans thought that Diesel engines were too heavy. Lastly, Russia had been using Diesel for ages and was ahead in Diesel technology apparently.
Everyone has heard of Wittman but the biggest ace of WW2 was in fact Kurt Knispel and he is virtually unknown.

I am Russian and I feel somehow strange to speak, but I think that Michael Wittmann was a great tanker of World War 2 ...
I respect the soldiers and not the country and the government for which the heroes are shedding their blood.
