I did a test speedrun showcasing my strategies. Final time: 55 minutes 36 seconds.
Notes:
- Easy-mode, new game
- I use continue abuse quite a lot. If I make too many mistakes, I quick reset and 'continue'. No time is lost doing this. The failed attempts have been edited out of these clips.

00:16 - ahh, changing rooms before seeing anything. I love this, though a bit hard to do.
00:23 - that's right, it's the great strafe-running technique. Saves a lot of time in apartment.
00:27 - it's often quicker to turn and examine the required objects yourself than let the computer turn you.
00:50+ - this navigation strategy is pretty interesting, check it out.
02:09 - the tunnel speed movement is used, with repeated breaks in Henry's movement (to avoid slowdown). Saves 5-6 secs.

Yeah, they can be pretty fickle in that respect. I suppose you could always use the PS2 version with a DVD Recorder. I don't think that there is any real difference between the two versions of the game. I have both, but have admittedly not played much of the PC version to know it intimately. Anyway, I just wanted to say what a good job you've done with this, and if you ever do find yourself in a position to record a high quality version, I would certainly look forward to it. : )

Ok, thanks.

You know, you should consider submitting this to speeddemosarchive(dot)com. They do not yet have a speedrun for Silent Hill 4 and this is looking very good. They might have a beef with the continue abuse, but I'm not sure. You would have to post in the forums and get some feedback on it. Anyway, it's a great website and this would be an excellent addition to their collection if you would be willing to share it.

Guess a main problem is that my computer becomes unreliable if I try to record on high quality, which is what SDA demands. Continue abuse would almost certainly be a problem for them too.

How did you do that at 0:16?

Leaving room without gameplay showing? It's a matter of pointing Henry to a correct direction (somewhere towards the door) while trying to examine the door, basically... but the window is very small, and I can only do it occasionally.
