Nina (Natalie Portman) dances the part of the Black Swan during opening night of "Swan Lake" in the new Fox Searchlight film "Black Swan," which opens in select theaters on December 3rd.

A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, "Black Swan" stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler"), "Black Swan" takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the Swan Queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.

Directed By: Darren Aronofsky
Choreographed By: Benjamin Millepied
Starring: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Sebastian Stan, Vincent Cassel, Janet Montgomery, and Barbara Hershey

Whether Natalie is a good dancer or not, the choreographers really played off of her strengths and skill level regardless. So what if she's not like a prima ballerina? She did the steps she was given well.

Why do dancers watch this movie get so offended? It's not supposed to depict the life of a dancer, but a mentally disturbed girl who is pushed over the edge. And like obviously this isn't real ballet, it's a just a film. People get so smug "this isn't REAL ballet" like shut the fuck and enjoy the work of art that is this motion picture

Very bad movie??? Yeah, girl, this is a psychosexual thriller, of course it is going to be strange and confusing, that's the atmosphere of it. This movie is one of the best films I've seen. The story is awesome, dont give a shit if it's unoriginal, it is absolutely perfect in psychology and art. MASTERPIECE!!!

I have seen Red Shoes and I agree that the plot of BS is not original, but Red Shoes is based on Hans Christensen's fairy tail so you can call that unoriginal too. To say that the ballet is important or not in the movie depends on your interpretation of it. For me it wasn't, I saw everything as a metaphor of growing up so the lack of accuracy doesn't bother me that much it kind of contributes to the whole thing.

The black swan in any version of Swan Lake is the daughter of the bad guy, to put it bluntly. DA directed a cliched, psuedo-intellectual, mysogonistic and unoriginal piece of work. Have you seen Red Shoes? Prima ballerina (played by a REAL prima ballerina btw) is driven to dying for her art. Desperation & breaking down in reaching for the impossible,(i.e. perfection) is not new business. The ballet in BS WAS important - without it the film would not have got out of the blocks.

what I'm saying is that anyone who watches BS isn't expecting accurate ballet dancing, people aren't looking for that in the movie. What I meant with the "DA doesn't forget anything" is that him, as a director, is aware of the subject he is focusing on in the movie. You, as the viewer, can clearly see that the dancing scenes weren't "as important" as the whole breaking-down situation. I think he used the black swan ballet to present in a metaphorical way the mental breakdown of her whole.

Suggest you re-read yr post, then you might understand where I am coming from, but I doubt it. After all, no-one on the planet must diss any film star/director/studio, ever,. Must we all grovel at the feet of H'wood? DA doesn't forget anything? Still don't understand that line! BS not a documentary, if you are saying that too! Fact remains classical ballet & its promotion as pursued by the star was vital - why else indulge in all that alleged training & mega-hype?. Ppl can't get away from that.
