Banks have been ranked third from bottom in a new survey examining the public's customer service experiences across a range of industries.
The survey by moneysupermarket.com had the sector in 14th place, ahead of utilities companies and estate agents.
Hairdressers topped the poll for the second successive year, with the comparison site noting that these workers are "well-known for being friendly, chatty and personable".
Kevin Mountford, moneysupermarket.com's head of banking, said financial services could learn a thing or two from this approach, as by dealing with customers in a "more personal, sympathetic way", the sector could significantly improve the way it is perceived.
He added: "The industry has gone down the automated route and as a result has lost some personality."
