This panel discussion explores the social and historical context in which Jane Jacobs emerged and the ways she has influenced modern urban design and planning. Are her principles still applicable and effective? To what extent are today's challenges of a different caliber? Panelists include, Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York exhibit co-curator Christopher Klemek, urbanist Roberta Brandes Gratz, Samuel Zipp of Brown University, Julia Vitullo-Martin of the Manhattan Institute. Architect and critic Joseph Giovannini was the moderator.

It seems to me that people need to go back and listen to Jane Jacobs ideas and take them into consideration and re-adapt them to new realities of today.

One thing keeps baffling me: people like lively streets with all sorts of little shops and street stands. Jane Jacobs, it would seem, liked it too. Yet that's not what's being built and planned in cities and towns these days. Instead it's big giant superstores that you have to drive to and park infront.
