We found these things in the sand on Koh Phi Phi, Thailand this past summer. Some local boys were busy uncovering them all with sticks so that nobody would step on them. (They are normally buried an inch or two below the sand and if you're barefoot.... ouch!).

  • Did you poke ether one of them? It helps a lot to figure something out. (:

  • This reminds me of the wolf in the intro to True Blood. Also, my back when I watch a psych thriller... I'm just saying.

  • Yes, this is an urchin. More specifically, a heart(irregular)urchin. Contrary to the regular sea urchins, which are circular and have their mouth on the bottom (ventral side) and their anus on the top (dorsal side), heart urchins are bilateral, with their mouth at one end and the anus at the other end. Many live within the sediment and can move through with these long, slender spines you see on the video.

  • wht the heck are those?
