OS X Lion officially launched this morning, and our own Jon Rettinger has already downloaded the update and started checking it out -- he started earlier with Mission Control, and is now taking a look at LaunchPad.

LaunchPad gives you instant access to all of the apps you have downloaded onto your Mac by clicking on the LaunchPad icon on your computer's dock. The app setup looks a lot like iOS, and allows you to arrange applications and put them into folders for easy access and organization purposes.

Check out the video above to see LaunchPad in action, and head back here throughout the day to see video demos of more of OS X Lion's features.

  • What is wrong with just launching apps from the dock or by using spotlight? I just don't get the launchpad idea on a Mac. I think it is just as cool as ping :-)

  • Launchpad is basically a stack, but looks cooler. They should implement this for all the other stacks like documents and downloads.

  • Launch Pad is a great idea for those Who Purchase Touch Screen Monitors or have Touch Screen Laptops.... So There ! That's what its For.

  • It would be awesome to implement some metadata-head in the .app Bundles, so that Spotlight would offer a more semantic way of searching. The way i imagine it, developers would get to define "Spotlight Patterns", so that i can access functions of an application by typing in some fancy syntax, which would be, as is applescript, very close to natural language.

  • Spotlight does about 95% of the work, i don't even use the Dock that much, and i only have my top ten apps in it permanently. But there are times i want to launch an app that i use seldom and i don't remeber his name. For this stuff, i think, Launchpad comes in handy: I can create Folders by Subject, so that i can navigate to just those Apps through semantic.

  • i play starcraft 2 too! wtas ur username? mine is NoTiCe 187

  • You sound like Jon Quach in this video =)

  • i use launchpad because if the application isn't in the dock you have to open finder and click applications and then open the application so launchpad is handy

  • STARCRAFT 2!

  • Get a magic trackpad, then you can use a 4 finger pinch gesture to open launchpad on a desktop

  • the reason your dock is so messy is that you don't use launchpad!

you put your favourite apps in your dock, not all your apps.
