There are married poor, and divorced, good job, not poor. It's about unselfishness and teaching children at an early age responsibility for themselves and respect for others and all the other things that make a good human.
Of course A good, happy, stable marriage where both spouses are involved and teach these things (a rarity) is a good place for children to grow. But any person, couple, or group of people can teach these things just as well. Its not the marriage, it's the teaching.

The marital status of a child's parents is one predictor of future income, but marriage stability is often a function of income, which is an even stronger predictor of future income. So, it's difficult to determine whether or not the relationship is spurious . There is also a significant body of literature that statistically studies the reproduction of wealth from parents to children. Addressing only one less significant indicator of poverty while neglecting others is not the best solution.

I would agree that the government programs don't work; I would agree about marriage. However, the poverty level is not raised by the same amount as inflation every year. If you are living 1% the poverty line and get a 2% increase in wages or SS benefits, the government can now say that you are above the poverty level. Does that make any sense?
