The window manager I developed for evaluate multi-window interaction on high resolution wall size displays. The software is written in C++ using the VRJuggler libraries. The cursor is controlled by tracking the dominant hand.
It isn't as bad as it looks. You soon get used to it.
To answer your question, it is cheaper and takes up much less room. You also don't have to worry about alignment and colour consistency is less than an issue.
