For most of the time it didnt hurt, but when my dentist used the cleaning files, i got some pain. and im a trooper so i dealt with it but at times some of the filing was causing some rather uncomforatable annoyance. I also got an abcess after my root cancal which caused large swelling and further annoyance, but after it was all done Its fine.

How did your root canal go? I need to get one and I am horribly afraid to do so!

addy7318 I'm 31. I've avoided the dentist all my life until a few weeks ago. I've had a cleaning and a root canal.

I feel calmer and less rushed when it's dark. I book for 6pm or later. I have someone go with me, stay with me & talk for me. I wear sunglasses and close my eyes. I listen to mp3s. I ask for numbing gel. I keep reminding myself 'he's not hurting me, I'm okay'. I have hand signals: raised hand "I'm in pain", waving "I'm freaking out, I need a break".

You'll be okay.

Thank you for posting this. I have 2 teeth that are sensitive and I have never had a root canal. I have high high anxiety when it comes to the dentist. I am afraid I might pass out in the chair just waiting to have it done. Seeing that I have almost blacked out before when I had a filling. What do you advise I do to keep calm while enroute to the dentist and once I am in the chair?

I JUST got back from having mine. It took 45 minutes and my dentist was amazing. I cried before because I was so nervous but I can honestly tell you that I felt no pain. Not even from the numbing needles because he pre-numbed that area before with a cherry flavored gel. Please do yourself a favor and don't sweat it. It really doesn't hurt at all.

@maf101 The second part hurt a little. It felt like I was been poked muliple times with something sharp. I also felt a tight pressure around my tooth. It lasted only for a few minutes. It was during the middle part.

I held my breath during the burning bit. I was worried I'd gag if I smelt it.

The noise was freaky at times. I turned my mp3 player on loud.

Everything turned out okay. My root canal is complete. My tooth is saved.
