You might think strange title, but yup, the 'original' Larry Winiwini vid on YouTube has surpassed 1 and a half million views since its appearance here 2 years and 10 months ago. See it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC9w4KWEgJE
Its the most popular didgeridoo vid on YouTube and even comes up on page one on Google.
Anyway, Larry is almost 3 years older now but he still plays a mean pipe. Listen to him. He's playing a deep yirdaki more than 6 foot long, it was taller than both of us yikiy danger baywara power tru!
He's put on weight as a result of not playing much football, he's been suspended for a period of time following an 'incident' at a match some time ago. Rumour has it that despite suspension terms being not being allowed to be present at any match either as a player or member of audience, he has been spotted peering from the stringybark forest on the edge of the grounds. Or sitting inside a vehicle the whole match so as to avoid recognition by others in the audience :-)
So what do you guys think? Does he still have it?
It seems like his trumpets are a bit softer sounding than the other trumpets I hear from players in the east like will thoren etc.. Is there a different technique that he uses to get a different sound? it just seems like his overtones have a much warmer tone to them.

@Musicislove123 the difference is probably in the quality of the instruments, what larry is playing is a high grade stick and they tend to have softer overtones. could be technique as well but i'd say it is instrument quality first and foremost

@ididjaustralia Ah ok, I'm still a beginner with this stuff so I'm trying to learn as much as I can lol What kind of yidaki does Larry play? the decoration is amazing but I love the drone, seems like a very balanced stick too, not too bassy or overly bright but it's sometimes hard to tell with computer speakers.

@Musicislove123 get yourself some good speakers, they're cheap these days, for US$60 you can get decent speakers, will be worth while as the audio in our vids are all high quality digital recordings :-)
the stick larry is playing is indeed well balanced, its a gem of a yirdaki made by larry himself, one of 3 specially-commissioned yidaki 6 foot or longer.

@ididjaustralia I'll be sure to do that :)
I'm actually interested in getting a really good yidaki someday, do you have any advice on where I could look for one? I live in Guam and it's not that far to fly to Fremantle or Sydney (just expensive! lol) so I could fly down and try one out in person and then ship it back, but what are your recommendations for someone who wants to get the real deal yidaki? any help is appreciated :)

@Musicislove123 the iDIDJ Store, we only have a small selection online though as all up we have 500+ authentic Arnhem Land instruments in stock and it just takes a long time to put them online, anyway they're all hand-picked and chosen for their cultural integrity, artistic merit, exceptional acoustic quality and sound construction. you won't find a better selection anywhere in the world. this particular larry winiwini yidaki is for sale if you are interested.
