i think and also it means the one clapping the hands represents the side raising the question (offense) for the other opponent to "defend" his viewpoints. that's what my teacher said.

Thanks for answering my question. But I don't quite understand what you mean by 'slamming the door on rebirth in the lower 3 realms of existence'? What is lower 3 realms?

It's partly for effect, but it also symbolizes slamming the door on rebirth in the lower 3 realms of existence.

And I would have thought that this would be a quite contemplative practice... I am surprised... I just looked at two other films of monks debating and it looks almost wild. Interesting.
