May is Bike Month in the Roanoke Valley, and local organizations have teamed up to host a series of events celebrating bicycles, bicycle culture, and bicycle people. Some of the events that have been planned for the month include:

• Bike Ready at Roanoke's Earth Day Celebration: RIDE Solutions is excited to partner with the organizers of Earth Day Roanoke to present Bike Ready on Saturday, April 23rd from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. in the parking lot of the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op. Area bike shop mechanics and volunteer technicians will offer two hours of free 10-minute bike tune ups. Tune ups will provide a basic check of tires, chains, brakes and other safety equipment.

• Mayor's Bike Ride: Saturday, May 7 at 10:00 A.M. Join Roanoke Mayor David Bowers on a short, family friendly ride along the beautiful Roanoke River Greenway from the new Vic Thomas Park all the way to downtown Roanoke.

• Bike Shorts Film Festival: The Shadowbox brings you the Bike Shorts Film Fest May 28th. Submissions are now being accepted for locally made short films that center on cycling -- anything from mini-documentaries to sweded films. The winner of the film festival will receive $100. Submission deadline is May 10.

• Discounts for Cyclists: Tudor's Biscuit World is bringing back Casual Fridays, offering cyclists a 3-topping biscuit and large coffee every Friday in May. Fork in the Alley and Fork in the City both will reward diners who arrive on bike with 15% off their meal every Friday during Bike Month.

• Bike Rack Hunt: RIDE Solutions is trying to document every bike rack in the Roanoke and New River Valleys with a region-wide Bike Rack Hunt photo contest. Photos will be integrated into the Bike Roanoke interactive bike map.

A complete list of the growing roster of events can be found at www.bikeroanoke.com/events. In addition, bicycle enthusiasts are encouraged to create their own events and submit them to event organizers. Selected events will be promoted through the group's website, their Facebook page, Twitter updates, and other outlets.

The Bike Month mission is to bring attention to both the opportunities and challenges of bicycling as recreation and transportation in the Roanoke Valley by creating events that involve all interest, skill, and age level of cyclists. To support the region's certification under the League of American Bicyclist's Bicycle Friendly Community Designation, events are aligned with the six E's of Bicycle Friendly Communities: Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering, Evaluation, and Equity.
