Why it's not a good idea to fly your AXN RC plane with missing motor magnets

It's common knowledge that the motors on the AXN Floater RC plane sometimes suffer from loose or lost magnets. I figured I'd just keep flying until the motor lost a few more magnets and became too weak.

Bad idea.

A few flights later, the motor jammed up -- which overloaded the speed controler and caused it to to overheat. Fortunately it "blew" just as I was landing so I was able to get to the model and unplug the battery before it caught fire.

Moral of the story: If your AXN motor throws a magnet, replace it before things get worse!

Love those AXNs though! :-)

  • Seal the tail feathers and pop a Cox 049 on the back. You won't have that problem anymore.

  • @TestECull Don't worry, that idea has crossed my mind!

  • @xjet hehehe, now that'd be good.

Bernie at Cox Engines dot CA will sell you a throttle and a glow head adapter that lets you use standard glow plugs as well. Dirt cheap. Shipping to NZ may be a problem, but the parts are pretty cheap, and it'd let you continue to fly the AXN mostly as you do now.

  • @TestECull I've got an engine that Bernie sent me so I'm thinking that the 0.49-powered AXN will be placed on my list of "to-do" projects real soon.

  • The missing magnet also mean unbalanced Motor housing which also means more amps which also means more heat which will also mean a dead motor.. :)

BTW Xjet... what do you think of those orange servos? any good.. hows their centering and how do they compare to the other bunch of cheapos the HXT900s ? ? ?

  • @pavcon I'm quite happy with the 10g orange servos -- I actually use them in preference to the HXT900s which I used to use. The HXT900 seems to have had a few changes over the years and I think they're perhaps not quite as good as they once were.

  • Bruce, I do not know if I should put like or not? but I bet you had fun till it came down!? I think you should have stock in the AXN I know you have sold a lot of them, just from your videos! you should call and tell them to start paying for your advertisement as well as your endorsement. may be ask them to put better parts in them so this will not happen. or not? lol Have a Great Day!

  • was that a kiwi flag in the back ground mate

new motor then fly again mate

  • @xjet Oooh, sweet. I can't wait to see it fly!

I wish I could pop by the SWMAC but it'd involve flying over ten thousand miles on a full scale.

  • @xjet Thank you for The answer. REaklly appreciate. Yes I actually experienced some problems in the last batch.

I experienced some jittering when the servo was full travel on 1 side. Haven't checked if it's always on the left or right on all of them. that's on full travel though. in the mids they perform as they used to...

thanks for the Answer once again. I will try the oranges next time :)
