GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND LOOK AT THE HOWLING STONES GUIDE WHICH TELLS YOU WHERE TO FIND THEM ALL. SOME ARE ONLY AVAILABLE AT SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE GAME, SO YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET SOME OF THEM RIGHT AT THIS POINT (BUT DON'T WORRY, THEY ARE ALL AVAILABLE EVENTUALLY). ONCE YOU HAVE HOWLED TO THE STONE, THE GOLDEN WOLF WILL APPEAR ON YOUR MAP AND YOU CAN TRACK IT DOWN (THE LOCATION IS BASED ON WHAT ORDER YOU GET THEM IN).

That's an entirely optional shortcut for later. You don't need to go that way and if you're referring to Death Mountain while in your wolf form, then that means you're going the wrong way. Watch the video.

Because the games are all originally Japanese, I think they used a word meaning "humanoid" in Japanese for transforming using the Shadow Crystal later on. Because of this Wolf-Humanoid, I think they tried to keep it the same word throughout the game to avoid confusion. This is translated into English as "human" so that it's new-player-friendly. I don't know much about Japanese, so I could be totally wrong though.
