  • I just recently bought this movie on VHS and this scene isn't on there...LOL! Do you have a special edition or something? Or is it on the DVD?

  • I just got the 'torrent download' (A)

The scene was used for a school project and some of my other students bought the dvd as well, and as far as I know, they did have this scene..

  • This may be one of the most overwhelmingly sad films I've ever seen. It has a power in its marriage of music, themes and visual beauty that transcends typical cinema. Haunting, in the truest sense of the word.

  • haha, this scene has this adam and eve biblical allegorical, feel to it. the two bared subjects walking through a land of plenty. in this case the fruitful, plentiful, sustenance is provided by books instead of plants and livestock. and there is something very wild and sprawling to the environment-with the books laid around in no, sort of, stringent order- giving it, ironically, this very, sort of, natural, organic feel that fluidly complements their natural, comfortable, shameless nakedness.

  • @alkoperkele I am so happy you said this. For years and years that tune annoyed me because I could'nt remember which movie it was from. Now I know it was both. Thank you

  • Greenaway, Nyaman, Mirren. For a hetero-male born in 1969 this combination constitutes erotic perfection.

  • this is my most favorite scene in this film. i find it so touching.i saw it in the theater and many pple walked out. silly people. i was also introduced to the glory of michael nyman for the first time, but when i bought the soundtrack just a few days later "fish beach" was not on it. i searched for years for that song and then thought i was delusional in thinking it was actually in the film. good to know i am not crazy. :)

  • Greenaway uses Michael Nyman's 'Fish Beach' from 'Drowning by Numbers' on this scene. It makes to this scene very comforting effect; we could actually get that feeling of safety. Beautiful amalgamation of music and film. When i hear the name Greenaway, I remember this very scene.

  • Thank You wery much for this info! I had hardtimes to find this song because its not in the *The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover* original soundtrack.

    thanks again

  • real = safe. hence "are we safe here?" and "if you don't read does that make you safe?" for the last question she needs to hear what she already knows, that his answer will be NO.

  • she is now wise enough to know that power, while offering protection, does not offer her the kind of love she needs to be real.

  • that's why he washes her, she is more tainted by it than him.

  • washing off the filth of Gambons character.

enter the new world of what she really loves.
