Bowfishing photo included. Giant mahi-mahis and giant yellowfin tuna went around the underwater Hydroglow green light, chasing the schools of big squid. I hit the tuna in the head with a fiberglass arrow. I used a compound bow with a 70-lb pull that normally would make a regular arrow go through the whitetail deer's body, but this tuna's head is so hard, the arrow didn't penetrate well. The fish died immediately and a lot of families ate well for several weeks.

  • @Dyapoyable I got my compound bows rigged for bowfishing when I was Managing Editor of both Bow & Arrow Hunting magazine and Gun World Magazine. I don't think there are bowfishing clubs in the Philippines, although I know there are archery groups. They are quite pricey. My other bowfishing set with solid aluminum risers cost me almost $3,000. I use my bowfishing rig with a HydroGlow underwater lights and they work great for mahi-mahis (dorados).

  • It's great at night, when you could not troll for blue marlins or giant bluefin tuna. I normally troll first using 2-speed Daiwas and Penns loaded with 130-lb Spiderwires, 400-lb leaders, then jig using 400g butterflys and at night I play around with my compound bow. You could clearly see a ton of baitfish and squid circling the light and you would have a blast hitting giant mahi-mahis.

  • Be careful with giant tuna, though. As you can see in one of the photos, I hit one in the head and the fiberglass arrow didn't penetrate the tuna's skull. My draw is set to penetrate and go through a big whitetail buck, as required by law. It would easily penetrate and exit the body of a water buffalo. But the tuna head is as hard as titanium, it didn't penetrate at all. Make sure you hit the fish in the head or you risk getting pulled by the fish and you have to quickly cut your line.
