A two-part video lesson on this popular study by Sor, number 1 in the Segovia collection but better known by its proper name, Opus 6 number 8!

There were two things I failed to get around to saying in the lesson. The first is that it is important to note the different tempo marking if you are used to the Segovia tempo; the composer's tempo is Andantino, a more walking pace than Segovia's Lento (very slow!).
Secondly, in discussing the ornaments in bars 12, 14 and 16, I intended to add that if you look at a facsimile (as published by Tecla) of this piece, it is clear that the ornament marking in these bars is of the type that is generally known as an appogiatura, graphically that means that it looks like a small quaver (1/8th note). This kind of ornament is long, in that it typically takes one half of the value of the big note to which it is attached.

Later in the piece, and in all the other pieces of that kind, where the ornament can only of the quick, crushed in variety (acciaccatura) the ornament is shown as the small quaver (1/8th) with the addition of a little slash through the hook part of the symbol.

This distinction in the graphic presentation of the symbol is often not respected in modern editions; Tecla's is the only one to do so to my knowledge.

This lesson continues in Part 2!

  • I uploaded this study a few hours ago and just now I found your excellent video lessons. Thank you for your great, excellent work!! ***** It's a pity I wasn't aware of your analyses before I uploaded the Sor study.

    Regards Tor Inge

  • Thanks Tor, well yours was fine anyway, but nothing stopping you having another go if you thought you could do something else with it.

I hope you don't think of it only as a technical piece!?
