All are welcomed to attend the public memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the Oracle Arena, 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland. Organizers are asking attendees to arrive early. The Rev. Jayson Landeza, Police Department chaplain, will lead and conduct the service.


In the wake of the killing of four police officers by a lone gunman Saturday, the Oakland Police Officers Association has set up three trust accounts thus far for the families of the fallen officers, and officials are planning a Friday public memorial service that is expected to draw at least 10,000 people to Oracle Arena.

Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, of Tracy; Erv Romans, 43, of Danville; and Dan Sakai, 35, of Castro Valley, died Saturday after being shot in two related events by Lovelle Mixon, a 26-year-old parolee, who police had pulled over on a routine traffic stop. Police later killed Mixon.

Motorcycle Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord, died Monday at Highland Hospital. Sgt. Pat Gonzales was grazed in his SWAT helmet, and a bullet entered and exited his shoulder. He was treated and released Saturday.

Romans and Dunakin were both married and both had three children; Sakai had one child.

Meanwhile at the Police Department, the memorial of flowers, cards and letters to the slain officers' families continued to grow Monday afternoon.

The police officers association has been receiving food from the public and also buying food to feed officers who are working extended shifts for funeral-related activities. The food is being cooked for them by Oakland firefighters at the association offices near Jack London Square.

The Oakland public library has set up collection centers at its' branch libraries for cards and letters of condolence.

The Deputy Sheriffs' Association of Alameda County has established a memorial fund for the fallen officers. Contributions may be mailed to San Francisco Police Credit Union, attn.: OPD Memorial Fund, 6689 Owens Drive, Suite 125, Pleasanton, CA 94588. Make checks payable to OPD Memorial Fund.

There also is a Facebook site set up called Oakland Police Department Fallen Officers 3/21/09. More than 2,900 people have joined the cause at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/253615/28989168?m=1de5fdfc.

I think it is a combination of all at the same time on the face of that black police officer. Police officers are brother-black,white,asian,what­ever they are all brothers in blue. The pain and suffering of one is felt by all. The expression on the face at Mayor Dellums as he looks at the Police Chief pondering what he is about to say, indeed, what can he say??

I was there, it was an awesome experience, the entire Oakland Police Department was there. Officers and dispatchers from other city were patroling Oakland and staffing the Oakland Dispatch Center.

My Laptop just died Saturday morning - All my photos for this project and the video itself are on the hard drive, I never had time to back it up when I got back from the Memorial Service in Oakland, really need to get at the data to finish this Memorial Video.

I'm hoping to find a way to save the data on the laptops' hard drive so that I may finish this project and do another on the funeral service itself.
