A TEENAGER who pointed a loaded gun at a couple in bed has been jailed for 13 years.
Jason Mility, 19, used a ladder to climb in through the bathroom window at the home in Bobbers Mill and went into the bedroom where he threatened Brian Wheeldon, his partner and two sons with the weapon.
Mr Wheeldon wrestled the cocked Baikal gun from Mility, who fled the scene.
But Mility bit Mr Wheeldon's thumb in the struggle and left behind DNA which was used to link him to the crime.
Mr Wheeldon's partner, Kea Forry, said her sleep had been disturbed when Mility knocked an ornament off the bathroom window sill and into the sink.
She said all sorts of things went through her head when she saw the armed figure wearing sunglasses and a hoody at the end of the bed.
Ms Forry added: "I didn't know if it was a real gun. If it was loaded, were we going to die? I was aware Brian had somehow got the gun off him. He was saying, 'give me the gun, give me the gun'. Brian said, 'you're not having it...get out of the house'."
The court had earlier heard that Mr Wheeldon had been locked up for five years in November 2003, for causing the death of Joanne Bonser by dangerous driving.
She was the girlfriend of a man called Moses Fogo, who allegedly threatened to shoot and stab Mr Wheeldon last March.
Martin Elwick, defending Mility, had earlier suggested the gun belonged to Mr Wheeldon, who was keeping it for his own protection. Mr Wheeldon denied this.
Mility, 19, of Glamis Road, Sherwood, was found guilty of aggravated burglary, possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition and a prohibited weapon.
Judge Michael Stokes awarded Mr Wheeldon £750 to take the family on a short break to recover from their ordeal.
He told Mility: "Brian Wheeldon, showing immense courage, tackled you to protect his partner and children.
"Any householder confronted by an armed burglar in these circumstances would be justified in using considerable force to protect himself and his family from the very real risk of serious injury or worse that you presented. On this occasion Brian Wheeldon was a hero."
