Factsheets outlining the new framework for compliance checks have been published by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
A compliance check is how HMRC makes sure that your tax is correct.
The factsheets explain what might happen in a compliance check and new the powers and penalties introduced earlier this month.
As of April 1st 2010 HMRC will have one set of powers that allow the taxman to inspect business premises, assets and records and ask tax payers and third parties for information and documents.
The changes will also see new time limits for assessment and claims and important safeguards for customers introduced.
