Merideth is experiencing the same problem my mom has with the iPhone. The screen doesn't react to anything except your fingers, because it uses your fingers electrons to sense you're touching it. It prevents as dialing and such.

check out John Riches shutten down detroit and the ibuyusa video on you tube the guy has great words.
