According to Wikipedia, slimes are the materials left over after the process of separating the valuable fraction from the worthless fraction of an ore, in this case gold ore from the Homestake Mine in nearby Lead, SD (leed -- about 3 miles). The slime was a mixture of crushed gold-bearing rock and various liquids and chemicals. This was a plant where gold was extracted from the slime.
