This week's documentary is the empowering personal story of one Roma woman taking control of her own destiny. Maria José is a pretty, charismatic twenty eight year old. She graduated from one of Spain's top universities and has a prestigious career in social services. But she's also a gypsy and has had to overcome insurmountable obstacles to succeed. This uplifting film provides a new insight into the Roma community. Through the eyes of Maria José, we see how gypsies are facing up to the challenges of twenty-first century life. Made by the Emmy award winning producer of 'Behind the Veil.'

  • While in my heart I want to support the Gitanos of Spain as I have many happy memories as a kid of running wild with them on holiday in the early 80s I have to say this vid doesnt help. She complains that they have to live surrounded by rubbish and dumped cars, but who dumped the cars and rubbish? If you sh!t on your own doorstep dont blame Madrid blame your own laziness and lack of organisation. Buy a communual bin, once a week empty it into a truck and drive it to a dump site, simples,no?

  • @younes727 fuck you

  • Whatever happened to the barrio president and the directive in order to get organized and fight for their rights? Land invasion in Puerto Rico get streets, electricity, schools, and water service etc. It is all in getting organized and seek for their rights (and land invasion is wrong because they are taking government land). Some are expulsed.

  • stupid girl blaming mainstream spanish society...

  • so is that why many gypsies refuse to send their kids to school? To get the full picture, I think you should ask a Gypsie father what he would think about it....better still, read a few papers to find what actually happens. On racist attacks, again you need to have lived (like I did) for 10 years next to a gitano project to know that Gypsies don't hold much love for payos and that translates into physical violence.

  • it's more complex than that but who can deny racism plays an important role in the exclusion of these people from mainstream society? gypsies are the least integrated minority in spain and the main victims of racist attacks. that partly explains why they live in such close-knit communities; it is a defense mechanism of ethnic minorities in every culture that treats them as less-than-equal. i hope spain abandons these old prejudices and begins a path of reconciliation.

  • too bad maría josé is not a stereotypical roma. one has to live 10 years next to a 'gitano' project to know that not everything is racism.

  • Thank you so much.
