A simple plot, using 11 shots to explain the certain types of match cuts (establishing, shot/reverse, etc.) and also to expresses a single relapse in time. Also taken to account was the 180 degree rule, which kept subject A on the right and subject B on the left, to diminish confusion with blocking.

1. (0:00 - 0:07) Establishing Shot (A+B)
2. (0:07 - 0:10) Shot (A)
3. (0:10 - 0:20) Reverse (B)
4. (0:20 - 0:27) Shot (A)
5. (0:27 - 0:57) Establishing shot/Flashback(A+B)
6. (0:57 - 1:01) Over the Shoulder (A)
7. (1:01 - 1:08) Over the Shoulder (B)
8. (1:01 - 1:15) Over the Shoulder (A)
9. (1:15 - 1:23) Establishing (A+B)
10. (1:23 - 1:25) Point of View (B)
11. (1:25 -1:34) Reaction shot (B)

  • Thanks for making and posting this. Do you know of any more videos where I can learn about all the different "types" of shots and cuts? I'm in a video editing class and I want to 'see' the examples, rather than read about them.

  • I don't know of any specifically, but you can always surf youtube or just watch a movie and try to pick them out. I tried labeling the shots and what time in the video they occur in the info section below my username and the date added of the video, so i hope that may help too.
