Here's some vintage USSR propaganda showing us how they extinguished a gas leak fire. The same technique could be used for the oil leak in the gulf.
The Russians used nukes to put out fires like this a total of 5 times.

We've tried similar things - project Plowshare for instance - which is why we don't use nuclear charges in scenarios like this. Yes it stops the flow, but neutron activation of the gas supply makes it radioactive and no longer usable. In short, a gigantic waste of valuable fuel. Another poster was correct, the same thing can be accomplished with conventinal explosives - without the radiation effects.

Hee in the USA we have the "Voice of America", it's radio and TV produced for foreign countries with programming in both native languages and English....and it's all produced by our lovely State Department who broadcast this stuff 24/7. Modern day propaganda.
