This is the finest scuplture of its type in East Yorkshire. It is the work of at least two, possibly three sculptors which straddle three distinct periods: Late Saxon, Viking Age and Norman. It predates the present church and may have stood outside the plac of worship as a visual aid for Christianity at a time when most common people were illiterate. In the past the cross was effectively cut in two by the iron fittings which held it in place. Later, it was reconstructed the wrong way round. On top of the cross is a socket into which a cross head would have been fitted.
