On Tuesday, November 10th, 2009, Rhode Island Governor Donald L. Carcieri vetoed H5294/S0195, which would have extended to same-sex couples the ability to make final arrangements for deceased loved ones.

  • This action in RI shows that the anti-gay movement in our government and churches is driven by hate. I don't want to hear anymore "we don't hate gays, we just disagree with the lifestyle" nonsense. Not after this. Even if I disagreed with the gay lifestyle, whatever that means, I would never tell a grieving person they couldn't honor their loved one.

    Oh, but I'm sure some of Carcieri's best friends are gay. But of course they are. ;-)

  • The governor has also endorsed groups that falsely claim that marriage equality would destroy other people's marriages and harm children. I would hope that a public official would be more responsible and distance himself from that kind of hate.

    We should all be able to make the funeral arrangements for our spouses. This is about the most basic of decencies.
