So, to fill it you have to dismantle the lid (nuts, bolts, etc.). That wouldn't do someone in the snowbelt much good when it is covered up with snow. Even so, the cats, 'coons, and 'possum STILL all get to eat the food since it falls into a food-catcher. What exactly is 'coon and 'possum proof about it?

True... its a California weather design.
The main problem is the Coons breaking into the feeder supply jar. The cats can eat during the day just fine but the coons etc attack the feeder at night. They chew through the plastic and destroy the feeder. So now I can leave on vacation for a week or so and feel comfortable that the feeder is still in tact. The coons could always overturn the feeder and also reach into it with their little hands. This simple design prevents that.
