UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage unit, leads Amtrak train 6 through Galesburg, IL. Another one of Amtrak's wonderful GE P42 pieces of junk failed and this beauty was called to the rescue. When will Amtrak.....and every other railroad for that matter......get a clue and realize that these GE motors just dont make the cut? Anyway, enjoy the video. Its certainly one for the books.

  • Nice catch dude! Love that horn! And P42s arent pieces of shit. They're the best 4 axle pullers money can buy. EMD's F59PHIs arent any better really. Things break down. you gotta remember that those P42s are in constant motion, constantly running. You'll have breakdowns.....specially when your maintenance isnt all that good. Thank the government for stepping in to make Amtrak better when they're fuckin killing them.

  • @6V92TA I understand about breakdowns and everything, i work for the railroad. I was talking more about GE in general. Dont get me wrong, GEs arent all bad, and EMDs arent perfect either. But I will say, given the choice between a GE and an EMD I will ALWAYS choose an EMD. I have many of both and in the end, I think EMD makes a better product. Thanks for watching!

  • Apparently my idea of using the SD70ACe as the basis for a new E74-PHTI passenger engine isn't so far fetched as I thought.

    E - E6 style sloped front with E8/9 portholes

    7 - 70 Series

    4 - 4300 HP

    P - Pasenger duty

    H - Head end power

T - Tunnel motor (Technically, I think the low radiator intake grilles on a Genesis count too.)

    I - Isolated cab

  • @MAL6000 I would love to see that. Thanks for watching!

  • What's a little disappointing is that as the lead locomotive passed, instead of the typical EMD bell sound, it sounds like one of those cursed electronic units.

  • @atsf929 if only GE didn't exist...

  • @atsf929 lol it should have a more modern front, but then again, EMD can make 2 variants, the E6 front and an F59PHI or MP36 front... and then somehow squeeze 1000 more hp into a 16V710; MPI did that with the 645 (they somehow fixed all the bugs in it)

  • i have an n scale kato 1989 from cabboose hobbies

  • @BNforever2009 Acceleration

  • the government needs to privatize amtrack

  • Those Genesis units pull good and runs real good too--Im convinced, good maintenance is the key. These things run long distances everyday and dont stop, of course theyre gonna break down and have problems (remember the GP-9's??) an Amtrak engineer once told me just one of those units can pull a 40 car train easy and on steep grades with no problem, he doesnt see why they have to use 2 units pulling a 8 or 7 car passenger train.

  • awesome video!
