I don't see that as a retcon, nor do I agree that assimilation is a new idea for the borg. I think it must have came about shortly after they became cyborgs which was long ago.

Brilliant episode, yeah the Borg were great here, got a bit shit in Voyager though.

I remember seeing this for the first time, and you know, even with all the SFX and battles and ships whizzing about, there was just no substitute for this kind of great writing. Plus, the Borg were still bloody scary at this point!
