I've recently discovered CHDK. One of it's features allows you to alter (increase/decrease) the bitrate of the video capture, and allows for zoom during filming along with different focus options during video filming.

This is a quick test of the high frame rate video mode (60 fps) and 2 bitrate versions of the large 640x480 @ 30 fps video. I am surprised and impressed by the sharpness of the video for this age of camera. I love CHDK!

As you can see though, the zoom noise is very loud, there is a constant funky background noise, and the autofocus doesn't always work well. But for an old camera I am happy it can generate a decent video. My favorite parts of CHDK are the time lapse, HDR, and high speed photography..

These clips were imported into Vegas then rendered at 720p, so the quality you see (if watching in Youtube HD) should not be degraded any from the original video although youtube makes everything 30fps, so you will not see the fluid action of the 60fps mode.

  • The quality is really nice! Do you use a high-speed SD card to be able to film with 3x bitrate?

  • @ciarmel - I was using a Sandisk ultra card, which I think is class 4. Not sure if that would be a requirement for 3x bitrate though..

  • How do you activate the 60fps mode?

  • Awesome! I have the same camera and so glad I didn't sell it. Also, I think it might take better pics than more modern Canon point-and-shoots because I think all newer cameras have 1/2.3" sensors now compared to this camera's slightly larger 1/1.8" sensor or something. I love this camera!!!!

  • How did you get this to work? I enable optical zoom in the video settings on CHDK and it doesnt zoom.
