Shantanu Panshikar one of the finest tabla players from India. He is the senior most disciple of maestro Taalyogi Pt. Sureshji Talwalkar. He continues to learn this art from maestro Pt. Vibhavji Nageshkar.
This is a very informal recording of Shantanu at his residence in Ambernath. I'm fortunate to know Shantanu from my childhood. He is my guru and like my elder brother.

  • Isn't calling him one of india's finest a slight over statement. I mean he is good... but you can't call him "one of india's finest". Not yet...

On a lighter note... that beard has been inspired by Pandit Vibhav Nageshkar ji :)

  • @allfieldsreq - Please share the list of finest tabla players (per your definition) - I have seen JOKERS being called Ustaads/Pandits/Best in the world/.... the list goes on!!! I do not have the recordings of Shantanu in his peak (15-20 years back i mean) - to give you the taste of what a finest tabla player is. On a positive note - I appreciate you at least acknowledging that he is good tabla player :)

  • @AmitTabla

15-20 years back? How old is Panshikar ji? I thought in his mid-30's?

  • @allfieldsreq He is in his early/mid 40's

  • kya haath hain..very much musical and grace personified..god bless u shantanu

  • @paragpas His hands are magical - so musical. I have heard from some folks that Sureshji used to ask the listeners to watch at his hands - very elegant movement which is hard to find in some of the very famed artists today.

  • Besides that I liked him playing, it's amazing how an untuned tabla can sound like pakhavaj :)

  • @arabinda..very rightly said..he uses the entire face of the tabla..my mother used to learn classical vocal from his father who is a disciple of pt nivruttibuva sarnaik..

  • i love the way he uses the entire face of the tabla, very musical.

  • I know Shantanu since from when I was 14 years old. he used to come at my place that time. He is the senior most student of Pt. Sureshji Talwalkar. Unfortunately he is not a recognised Tabla player in India now having such a talent and crispy, clear cut hand. Rare to find such talent nowadays. Thanks for posting.
