What I find most amusing about this comment is that it's 10 months old, but it's still very applicable at this moment. Your comment is timeless, really.

Syria's secularity has nothing to do with its brutal regime and the civil war that follows, where Al Qaida rebels who are as bad as the dictator they want to take down have started a war that has slaughtered tens of thousands.

And Lebanon is totally under Hezbollah control--while day to day things may still be in the hands of the government, Hezbollah has the final say over the country's future--it has taken full military control from the Lebanese military and has let no one stop them.

Syria is secular and Lebanon is quite democratic, didn't say they have a democratic government. But they have freedom of religion. Christians, Druze and Muslims can live side by side. The President is Christian while the Speaker of the house is Muslim. People can wear what they want and even marry within each other. There are problems with Hezbollah but they don't control everything. I have been to both Syria and Lebanon by the way.

Did you just call Syria "democratic"? Come on.

And Lebanon is currently ruled de-facto by the Shiite terror group known as Hezbollah, which is ultimately in control of Lebanon.

If your are speaking about Arab countries surrounding like Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan you are sadly mistaken! They are very democratic and secular. But, if you speak of Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, then I agree. The rest of your post I like. Great!

I speak not of Muslims nor Arabs as individuals--generalizing against them would be bigotry and racism, and frankly, many of my friends and coworkers are devout Muslims who I respect. The same way "some Jews you met" might not be the nicest people, it is improper to judge based on the behavior of some.

What I am talking about instead is the Arab countries, governments, and systems of the countries that surround Israel. In those, minorities and women are second class citizens.

Some Jews I've meant do. And please don't mix Arab culture which is prevalent with Muslims, Chrisitians and Druze people and Islam. The Islam you find in Africa and Asia is different from that of the Middle East. MOST Muslim men don't treat their wives like that. I am sick and tried of that as an AFRICAN MUSLIM WOMAN. In my culture women have the upper-hand in the authority, we were the founders of feminism. AFRICA, ASIA (Except Middle East) and Europe/Balkan don't have this problem.
