@jimetrillis: What's good about doing showdances and/or competition, regardless of your level, is that you learn advance techniques and styling you would not otherwise learn. You represent your teacher and studio on the dance floor so they want you to look exceptional. I wish you only the best in your dancing and your life too. Take care and keep dancing.
@jimetrillis: I'm American, a guy, from Hawaii, now in California. Latin is more my type too and I really love the "international" rumba and prefer to spend my time on it but then you're expected to do everything else including the standards, at least at my level (full bronze). If I move to Silver then maybe I can do just Latin. Competition is hard work, time and money. I can do the hard work but time and money, don't have enough of either (lol) especially time.
@IX19UT8O I've been dancing Ballroom for almost 2 years now, both latin and standard, I prefer Latin, it's more my type of rythms. I'm trying to enter in competitions but my teacher seems to be more focus on showdances and I still can't find a partner to compete with, the one I had left and I don't know if he will come back. I wish I had a teacher that encouraged me to enter in competitions haha. Btw where are you from?
@jimetrillis: I'm a hobbist, not a competitor dancer (my teacher pushes me to compete). I love the international latin style especially the rumba, cha cha and samba. I do the Argentine tango but prefer the American one. I emotionally connect to it better. I know the Argentine affectionados hate it but I feel you should do what you like and not what others say. Yes, would be nice to see Karina and Slavik together again but it may be a little late for them. What about your dancing? :)
@IX19UT8O Yeah I agree with you that brings a lot of problems specially with national identity, well I hope we can all pass that. Hey are you a ballroom dancer aswell? and btw if the news of Karina and Slavik back together are true, that would be the most exciting news I've heard in a loooong time :)
@jimetrillis: :) I don't understand why people are categorized in groups of any kind. You either a citizen of a country or you're not. Categorization tends to emphasize the differences and separate people instead of bringing them together as one. The importance is to have shared national values regardless of race or ethnicity. I love Karina, not so much Slavik but they were magic together. I heard they're back together again, don't know if it's true though. :)
@IX19UT8O hahah I know, so do I, I'm peruvian but I do have European heritage, and even if I don't look like a latina I do dance like one hahah. Btw I love Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia, they are my favorite couple after Karina Smirnoff and Slavik, too bad they split.
@jimetrillis: :) got here by chance while searching for a competition with Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko and I notice your comments. People forget that many Hispanics (Latinas) are of white mostly European heritage.I have a Spanish friend who is classified as a Hispanic. Like you she is as white as snow, blue eyes, and light brown hair. Spanish is her mother language. She laughs at her ethnic classification. :)
well the tan obviously look fake but the point was that since its Latin, they try to look like latin people do, or at least most of them look, but I'm a latina and i'm as pale as snow white
