His purpose is to help not hurt, plus he never whacks the horse with it it is as people said an extension of the arm. Also if the horse had a problem with it you would know, and the carrot stick does on continue moving when your hand stops making it more useful they are easy to make and he himself say you don't have to buy his tool to have a great relationship with your horse just some people so happen to buy his stuff :)
