In the middle of winter's brutality it's hard to remember the warmth of summer or even the promise of spring. And yet without winter, there can be no spring. Similarly, the losses, failures, crises and catastrophes of life serve to focus us anew. We need to cold to be grateful for heat. We need dark to remember the light.
