All photos taken within the last two years in france, except the opening dawn sunrise which was shot from Taba Heights on the red sea, looking across to Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Ironic i guess giving the tensions in that part of the world between people of the same colour but different faiths.
I heard the song for the first time in 2003. I was dry-lining and plastering part of a barn that was to be turned into a kitchen for a wedding cake business. The farmer heard me whistling something or other along to my radio, and having just bought himself a "twin cd recorder" (whatever happened to them, pc's probably) he said, i've got his greatest hits, i'll do you a copy.
And that's how i got the hear this song...
I made the video in one sitdown that took 10hours. I must have heard the song in bits and playback-synch pieces at least 100 times and never got tired of hearing it. Can't say favourite all-time song because that's not practical right, but there's something about it, the sentiment and powerful lyric, the melody, his vocal, the plaintive beginning before the band kick it with steel guitar and ace drumming - you get something that still has shock value, and a lyric and rhythm that keeps going and gets better towards its climax of possible truth, at least when he wrote it, that all combine to lift it up there with the best ever.
I once called Randy Newman, the greatest living American...probably an overstatement with hindsight, but what the heck.

hi CJ, yes i took all the photos, over last 3yrs actually, not two. I tried to find one's 2fit with the song in some way (obviously), & without any people 2get in the way. Any time you're in France you can look me up. I come to US, i let u know. My cleaning windows was taken off, & i was given another red warning. I wrote to 'exile films' 2ask permission to reshoot it & put it up again, they never even replied. Rude people if u ask me. Shame cos that song not on their site & it's 1of his best .
