Ignatius Rigor, who studies Arctic ice and climate at the University of Washington, has created an animation showing how the oldest thickest sea ice has been progressively flushed from the Arctic Ocean over the last two decades.

  • Great video and more importantly great science!

  • You are failing to distinguish between weather and climate.

  • @Traveler2112 Why isn't it a "global" STAY-RICH scheme promoted by the fossil fuel interests? They have a lot to lose, just as the cigarette manufacturers did and do. But what really gets a lot of people is the blow to their ideology: the threat is big enough that only common action by all the world's governments can reduce the emission of CO2 to required levels.

It is depressing that each year's delay will increase the cost by $0.5 trillion 2020-30 where action now would cost about 1% of GDP.

  • @chookbuffy: They still could alter current patterns.

  • @VictorLepanto It is not volcanoes. The scientists of the team that uncovered evidence of the volcanoes situated very deeply 3000m under the arctic in 2008 (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) measured the temperature only few meters above the hydrothermal vents and found no such evidence of heat transfer nor a change in temperature. The water in the arctic ocean is stratified. Waters in the arctic depths remain trapped near the bottom.

  • @recklessprocess: Wow, I didn't know about the volcanos, that would certainly explain alot. I is like putting a pot of water on top of a burner. It will cause the water to start circulating more b/c the increased heat causes more convection current. Leftist AGW hysterics are certalnly irresponsible swine. In 10yrs, when AGW is utterly discredited, will they have enough decency to be ashamed of themselves or will they just drop this obsession down the Orwellian memory hole?

  • @VictorLepanto Temperatures are not directly relevant in this study. The scope of the study is to observe the changes occurring in the arctic using available ice data. It is based on the tracking of drifting buoys and information from ice stations. A critical viewer can assess the animation in the context of the author's published work and assess it on scientific merits. That would most likely be on the lines of their data methods, coverage, and analytical techniques applied.

  • @chookbuffy: & of course "white" is the exact opposite hue from black. Why do you keep harping points that are not in dispute & utterly miss (every freaking time) the point I am making. 1st a mere model proves nothing, it merely illustrates the assumptions of author. It is supposed to anyway. The author of this video failed to illustrate his point, atleast to thoughful critical viewers. Do you see temperatures mentioned anywhere in this video? No. All we see is ice swirling around.

  • @VictorLepanto This video shows decline of multi year ice over the last 30 years based on the results of a study. The older ice is given a white label and as one can see, less and less of it remains

as the years advance. The author is quite clear on how they approached the data. You seem not able to see that one simple fact. In fact your only argument is just that it is "just a pretty swirly cartoon". In science yuu need to be specific about your criticisms and so far have failed to do so.

  • @chookbuffy: What are talking about? Has anyone ever told you what assuming does to you & me? The only person assuming anything is you. If ice flows South obviously it is going to melt. Do you have any idea what this world would look like by now if all the ice formed in the Arctic NEVER melted? Your not examining facts, your watching a pretty swirly cartoon & allowing your perceptions to be manipulated by a FALSE narrative. This is no proof of AGW, it is just a random contingency of currents.

  • @VictorLepanto You think it pedant, but I am checking actual facts here. You seem to be under the impression that once the ice flows out of view whether it be melting/thinning in that process that it does not melt but gets caught somewhere (clearly not shown in this video nor in any other independent studies for ice volume, thickness, concentrations). I'm sorry but the fact you see a decline in "white ice" is that old is melting. Vaguely calling on chaos theory is patently incorrect.

  • @VictorLepanto: The conclusion: The "old" or thick ice is merely caught in a backwash by chance simply doesn't flow out. A mere contingent accident of random current movements. It then, more slowly, eventually does flow out by a similar accident of currents. This is an illustration of Chaos Theory, not AGW Theory.
