An even larger number of people attended this year's Galway Novena as thousands of people sought divine intervention to help them through the tough economic times ahead.
Thousands of people flocked to this year's Novena. In the region of 10,000 visited the Novena on a daily basis over the nine days of the event.
This year, the focus was on 'a message of hope' and Novena director Fr Michael Cusack hoped that the event will give people a more positive outlook on 2009.
"Our hope is that the Novena will offer an opportunity to people to examine the reality of their lives and find a positive context for dealing with the issues which we all face in Irish society today.
"As ever, the novena petitions will tell of the reality of people's lives and the anxieties worries and stresses, which so many face in 2009. It is also true to say that the thanksgivings allow people to be ever more grateful for the many blessings that they we receive in our daily lives," he said.
