Rhizome Navigation: Genealogy Visualization (01/2007)

For an upcoming documentary by Benedikt Bjarnason, RhNav - Rhizome Navigation was used to create animated visualizations of large genealogy data sets.

The graph layout was done using an adapted force-directed algorithm and features more than 3300 persons.

What set's it apart from similar visualizations is the capability to show far more complex relationships by breaking up the classic tree structure and following a more rhizome-like approach - and of course the sheer amount of relationships shown.

That looks fantastic. What technologies have you used (for the rendering and the layout)?  Also is the previous video a force directed approach as well? Are the curves in the lines that denote relationships purely decorative or are they representative of something?

I used Rhizome Navigation which is a library for Processing which is an IDE for computational information design.

Both videos use a physics-based algorithm.

I'll post about the curves later.
