"The reactor is housed in the Burlington Nuclear Engineering Laboratory. The building is located at 2500 Katharine Stinson Drive.

N.C. State physicist Gerry Wicks said Thursday the reactor is leaking about 10 gallons of water per hour. Facilities are only required to report leaks in excess of 350 gallons an hour.

NC State said the leak was suspected on Friday and confirmed on Saturday. It said the public was not informed sooner because of the low level of danger. The amount of radioactivity was compared to what someone might receive getting an x-ray.

The school says the leak is so small that special equipment is required to detect its location in the reactor's lining. The company that can do that will not be in Raleigh until next week. In the meantime, the leak is being closely monitored. The reactor has been shut down since the leak was discovered.

The reactor operates at a level of about one megawatt, compared to nearly 3,000 megawatts at a typical nuclear power plant. It's one of roughly 20 university-operated reactors in the United States."

Again, the immediate way in which they word things as 'not a problem', 'of no concern', etc. concerns me, immensely... the title ABC chose for this report:
"NCSU says leak in reactor not a risk"

much love.~

  • The leak has decreased, mainly because the waste has been released outside the containment area....

  • @roseysunrise the truth is never delivered to us....

  • @BigM0211 i don't care about nuclear radiation and Global Genocide, let's talk about Tiger Wood's balls! i mean Golf balls! >.<

  • @TerriInBC Excellent question. In fact, however, "small leak" is the largest size of leak allowed from any official report of a problem from any type of facility. The more the industry depends on direct transfer from taxpayers to corporate coffers, the more insignificant any threat to the public. This is a research reactor, so it's allowed the largest size, 'small'; if this were a corporate "too cheap to meter" power plant, the leak would be 'insignificant', or even "falsely reported."

  • @rareinnature They know it's leaking less because they can measure the pool level. And no one is getting a dose from this leak. I don't think you realize how small of a facility that is.

  • its free to swim in that pool

  • how can a hole get smaller on it's own? lol

  • I would not be standing by that thing!

  • NOTHING TO SEE HERE....... MOVE ALONG

  • Check the left side of your keyboard. should be a Key called CAPS LOCK. if you press it once you switch to lower case. much easier on the eyes, and makes you look 25% less insane.
