BEN JOHNSON was a real cowboy ...brought to hollywood by Howard Hughes ..HE WAS A ''WRANGLER''.in alot of movies after that and was agood actor in his own right ..HE WAS ATHE REAL DEAL ..LIKE TOM MIX..he saved some horses and peoples lives in a stunt gone awry ..he laid a horse down in front of a wagon going over a cliff and saved people ... HE WAS THE real deal like tom mix
@BigDickMcGirk Add: P Roberts: I still miss his portrayal of Adam. The character was smooth like 10 yr old scotch whiskey. How lucky we were to have these men on our tv sets. RIP men of the Ponderosa.
@BigDickMcGirk Re: Pernell Roberts. I remember read TVGuide and watching interviews about Mr. Roberts' feelings on acting, Bonanza etc. He sounded like a 12 cyl car being utilized on 1 cyl only. It seems,he wanted to stretch his talents to the max, not because he was aloof, arrogant etc. If I got it correctly, the man was truly an actor and really wanted 2 work[the hell out of(my words)his craft and trade. Wikipdea seemed to cover it all pretty well.
@phlpchndlr Thanks for the info on Ben Johnson. I thought he was a great character actor, good or bad guy, whose presence and voice seemed to a "flavor" to any western he was in.
@BigDickMcGirk I was hoping Loren Green would recover for that production also, but unfortunately he did not. Roberts was approached but wanted nothing to do with it. As far as Hoss's son. Well, they just made that idea up for the Return to Bonanza series with no real explanation. As Hoss had already died in the "Forever" episode where Joe marries. And at the time Hoss was unmarried and childless. Landon originally wrote the episode for Dan Blockers character to marry. But he passed on.
@BigDickMcGirk Actually Michael died 2 years before of cancer, and Pernell didn't want any part of Bonanza for some reason.I think it would of been cool if Pernell came back though.
Lorne Green was going to play Ben again, but became ill and died of course before production began. Not sure why Michael Landon didn't return, he was still alive at the time and so was Pernell Roberts. Would have made more sense to bring the three back plus Hoss's son and Joe's wife and kids....
