Bear saw the need to shut the door on the Tennessee Vols coming into the state of Alabama and getting all of the top black players. To Bear's credit, he was able to finally convince the powers that be in that state to change their policies on recruiting black football players. Because of Bear's efforts, he was able to keep Tennessee recruiters from taking the top black players.
USC was NOT the first integrated team to play an all white Bama team, Tennessee Vols were in 1969. All American Jackie Walker intercepted a pass against Bama and took it to the house in 1969. 2 Other black players played and contributed to that Vols win over Bama. I think the thing that scared Bear more than any West Coast team beating his Tide teams was one of his SEC rivals (Tennessee) recruiting the top black players out of Alabama to beat his Tide teams.
CBS has played this show to where it's sickening. For one thing Auburn had a black player before Alabama did in both football and basketball Also Coach Bryant was friends with George Wallace and bigger friends with John Patterson who was more of a segregationist than George Wallace was at that time. The reason that Notre Dame won the national championship in 1966 was because of the love affair the media has always had with Notre Dame and they were not gonna crown Bama again.
Foxrob, I have an Auburn friend that told me that Auburn had black players on roster before Alabama had 1 black player. She has been a fan since the mid sixties of Auburn.
I have been a fan of Tennessee since the 1965 season. I know that Tennessee integrated the team in 1967 (black students were enrolled at Tennessee as early as 1961 0r 62) As I have said many times in this video posting commentary, by the time this USC-Bama game was played, Tennessee had double digit black football players on roster.
If they make this movie and continue to go on this theme that it was this game that integrated the SEC, It will be historically inaccurate. WRONG! If they want to see say that this USC-Bama game helped the University of Alabama to become the 5th SEC school to integrate, then I have no problem with that.
that change occurred several years ago at Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. If they make a movie, they will have to at least acknowledge that black football players were already on the rosters of Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. And just to save someone from posting that it was the first Nationally Prominent DEC team to integrate, well save your efforts because Tennessee in the mid sixties was ranked in the top 20 of all-time wins, all-time top 20 finishes and all-time bowl wins!
