Actually the needle used was a standard 16 gauge piercing needle. (she's just a wimp). A professional needle is hollow, but it doesn't actually remove any cartilage whatsoever. The sharp end of the needle is tapered, so it creates a half moon slit that is held open with needle while the jewelry is fed through. I was the one doing the piercing. I'm don't work for any piercing shops, but I do have some training in piercing.
