The Doha Debates focus on the early release of the Lockerbie bomber to Libya

TRNN releases this video as part of a content sharing agreement with Doha Debates.

The Doha Debates are chaired by the award-winning former BBC correspondent and interviewer Tim Sebastian, who founded them in 2004 and secured their editorial independence.

The Doha Debates states that although the Debates are financed by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, no government, official body or broadcaster has any control over what is said at the sessions or who is invited.

The debates focus on a single, controversial motion, with two speakers for and against. Once they have outlined their arguments, each speaker is questioned by the chairman and the discussion is then opened up to the audience for argument and a final electronic vote.

The 350-strong audiences are drawn mainly from Qatars student body and come from all over the Arab and Islamic worlds.

  • It is worth mentioning that throughout the course of this debate, the Conservative Member of Parliament opposing the release of al-Megrahi is willing to do anything but address the issue of justice and whether or not al-Megrahi was or was not innocent.

  • Only one of those speakers didn't sound like a person trying to further a political agenda.

  • @Fukkutah "american news"? is fox isnt pro american. if you got your head out of your ass you would see that fox is a wild machine gun. if you actually watched it you would see them banging obama ten times what they did to canada or what ever. they are biased only towards republicans

  • I love how this moderator guy is being harsh for all of the panels. It must be very difficult to be an impartial and likable guy at the same time, especially in this kind of emotional situation. He had to be hated by both sides, and I think he did a good job for it.

  • Do a web search of the exact phrase "Lockerbie in the Propaganda System" for information on the so-called Lockerbie bomber the corporate media has done a poor job reporting.

  • btw love what the Libyan man @ 34:00-35:20 had to say about Libya's corruption locking up political prisoners and dissenters, and/or innocent ppl accused of treason by other regular civilians who who want to get even. Its no wonder every Libyan is paranoid and mum. All someone has to do is point and your a goner.

  • *passionate

  • I love how daniel starts

"I feel compassionate about arab-anglo relations"

    he elaborates why

"b/c the arab world is important strategically....economically for the British"

Im so sick of white conservatives that just want to extend a hand to arabs b/c they want to ride our buttholes. They are no better than the facist party. One wants to kill us b/c we're less, the other wants to use us b/c we're less.

    Fuck them all.

  • There was a pathetically low level of discourse in this debate from all parties except for the Scottish man who lost a daughter in the bombing. The moderator brought the level of the debate down every time he opened his mouth, the for side was belligerent, there was a ghadafi apologetic on the against side, and the audience questions were all re-hashes of the opening questions or grade-school level polemics. This is worse than a middle school debate class.

  • Haha, yeah, after i posted my comment i thought of Fox News. I kind of see O'reilly and his buddies as infotainment more than news!

In retrospect this moderator IS really just being a good host and pressuring both sides, which is fair. I guess i was just caught off guard by how confrontational he seemed!

  • I don't know if you watch Fox News .. Hannity and O'reilly? Then again US news programming have become incompetent in producing real news and only capable of serving their master's agenda through spin, propaganda and in case of Fox news total made-up shit. Tim Sebastian is a seasoned journalist and broadcaster who asks the difficult questions. Such journalists have disappeared in America certainly during the Bush administration: example 9/11 unanswered questions and so much more.

  • Israeli mass murders and war criminals responsible for numerous acts of genocide and crimes against humanity have yet to be captured, sentenced or jailed, let alone released for compassion. These Israeli terrorists continue to dodge justice and have fled "Scot Free" from the worst cases of state-sponsored terrorism perhaps in the history of mankind. Why isn't that up for debate?
